Mary H. Black was born in Rockwood, Ontario on 29 September 1911, the daughter of Norris and Lottie Black. She was educated as School Section 8, Eramosa Public School before matriculating to the Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute. Moving on to Hamilton General Hospital she qualified as a nurse in 1933, joining the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps as the Second World War approached.

Black was to see active service in England, France and Germany from 1942-45. After her discharge she nursed at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital before transferring to the Hospital Library as Medical Librarian; sold together with copied research.
