John Louis Buckley was born on 22 August 1904 and lived at 19 Denby Street, Wheatley Hill, Bradford, Yorkshire. He enlisted in the Royal Corps of Signals in May 1935 and was serving with 28 Wing Section in the Far East when the Battle of Singapore began. He was posted 'missing' at the Fall of Singapore in February 1942 and again in the Netherlands East Indies. Buckley was finally captured on Java on 8 March 1942 and his first Prisoner of War Camp was at Boie Glodok, Batavia. He was variously posted to Tandjong Priok, Cycle Camp, Pangkalan Barli, Changi and Adam Park during his time 'behind the wire' and was lucky indeed to come out with his life.
