Promoted Sergeant in May 1899 he was serving in this rank when he was posted to South Africa in September 1899. Seeing action at Elandslaagte and later during the Siege of Ladysmith, Hill left South Africa briefly from December 1900-February 1901 whereupon he returned to active service. From then Hill served in South Africa well beyond the war, being tried and convicted by a Court Martial in 1905 which resulted in imprisonment and a reduction in rank.
