Richard Cranley Onslow was born in July 1857 and was commissioned Lieutenant in September 1876. He served during the early part of the campaign in Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, 12th (Suffolk) Regiment of Foot. Attached as Officiating Squadron Officer from July 1879, he served subsequently with the 10th Bengal Lancers, being present at the fighting at Jagdalak. From August-October 1880, he was Assistant Road Commandant in the Kuram Valley (Medal without clasp).
He became a permanent Squadron Officer in the 10th Bengal Lancers (later Hodson’s Horse) in July 1882 and was shortly afterwards appointed as Adjutant to the Viceroy’s Body Guard, which position he held until 1888 when he became Commandant of the Governor-General’s Body Guard, having already been advanced Captain in September 1887. Onslow was made Major in September 1896, Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1902 and Colonel in September 1905. He served subsequently with the Judge Advocate-General’s Department from March 1893 and retired in January 1909 - attending the Delhi Durbar of 1903 (Medal). He returned to the fold to serve as Deputy Judge Advocate-General in India during the Great War (BWM only) and died in October 1934.
