Alexander Hawtrey was born on 10 October 1819, the son of The Rev. Charles Sleech and Harriett Hawtrey. He was educated at Eton College, the family having a close affinity with the College - with 'Hawtrey House' still in use today - as recalled on their website:
'The Hawtrey family have been closely associated with Eton College for much of its later history, with members holding a variety of roles from Fellows to Dames to Masters.'
On 24 April 1842, young Hawtrey was made a Cornet in the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers. Advanced Lieutenant on 31 May 1844, he shared in the campaigns in the Sutlej (Medal without clasp) and Punjab (Medal & 2 clasps).
During the Battle of Chilianwala he was wounded in action and laid out on the field for some time, suffering from exposure as a result. When he dies on 15 February 1857 at Ostend, he was still suffering the effects.
