(x) Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 2 clasps, The Nile 1884-85, Abu Klea (507. Pte E. Richer. 1/R. Suss: R.) pitting from Star, fine
Elijah Richer was born at Herringstone, Ipswich and enlisted into the 109th Foot on 16 November 1867. Seeing service with them in the East Indies two years later he was transferred to the 37th Foot whilst out there. Returning to Britain on 21 January 1875 Richer was transferred to the 43rd Brigade in September that year.
Serving in the West Indies from 16 October 1875-28 February 1879 and Malta from 1 March 1879-19 July 1882, he joined the 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment on 18 July 1881. Posted with the regiment to Egypt on 20 July 1882, Richter was one of the small contingent of 2 officers and 25 other ranks of the 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, who fought with the Mounted Infantry Camel Regiment at the Battle of Abu Klea. Returning to Britain on 11 September 1885 he was finally discharged on 26 August 1889.
