New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated '1860 to 1861' (J. Saunders Gunr. R.M.A. H.M.S. Pelorus), good very fine
James Saunders was born in Lostock Green, Northwich, Chester in July 1826 and was a labourer upon his joining the Royal Marine Artillery in November 1845. He joined the Pelorus in July 1857 and was present with them during the campaign in New Zealand, when she was the flagship of the Australian Station under Captain Frederick Seymour. Saunders would have been in action during the Taranaki Campaign, at Puketekauri Pa and Mahoetahi, as well several small skirmishes in 1861. She also went up into Macuata waters, and held a conference including Enele Ma'afu and William Pritchard in July 1861. Saunders was discharged Corporal in November 1866.
