Army of India 1799-1826, 1 clasp, Ava (Lieut John M. Boyes, 38th N.I.), short-hyphen reverse, officially impressed naming, good very fine

John Monson Boyes was born on 7 March 1800, the son of Captain William Boyes of the 76th Regiment and Jane Boyes. Boyes petitioned the United East India Company to join the Madras Infantry as a Cadet in 1817, and this request was granted in the spring of 1818. His was indeed a military family, and his younger brother Lake Torreano Boyes (born 1807) served as an Ensign in the 10th Madras Native Infantry. Upon his brother's death on 13 February 1830, Boyes erected a monument in his honour at the Vellore Old Cemetery in the North Arcot District of Madras.

Boyes was promoted Lieutenant on 1 May 1824 and soon after Captain on 5 May 1825. Boyes married Mary Woodroofe at St. Anne's Church, Dublin on 1 July 1833. His appointment to Major appears in the Edinburgh Gazette issued 27 July 1838. Boyes was widowed on 10 April 1844, but was remarried to Marianne Hitchcock on 28 August 1851 at Monkstown Church in Dublin.

Boyes was gazetted as Lieutenant-Colonel in the East Indies on 6 February 1855, a rank which he retained upon his death at age 64 on 18 March 1863 at his residence in Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire), Dublin. He had at least three children: Delia, Edward, and John, born 1834, 1837, and 1840 respectively. After the death of her father, Delia received a £60 annuity until her own marriage on 9 October 1866; sold together with copied research.
