Joseph Green was born in 1794 and was baptised on 4 January 1795 at Alvechurch, Worcestershire. He attested for unlimited service in the East India Company's European Infantry on 13 May 1812, having previously working as a bricklayer. He was received at the East India Company's recruit depot at Newport on the Isle of Wight on 25 June 1812 where he was allocated to Bengal. Green embarked for India on the Inglis on 21 September 1812. He arrived at Calcutta, India on 17 February 1813 and was posted as Private with the 1st Bengal European Regiment. Green was promoted to Sergeant in 1820, Sergeant-Major in 1823 and became a Sub-Conductor within the Bengal Ordnance Department on 8 January 1825.
Green was further promoted to Conductor & Assistant Deputy Commissary of Ordnance within the Bengal Veteran Establishment on 22 February 1853 and then to Honorary Lieutenant & Assistant Commissary of Ordnance on 16 January 1854. He was pensioned at Lucknow on 11 June 1861 and remained in India. Green died of bronchitis at Lucknow on 20 July 1874 and was buried the following day at the Cantonment Cemetery, Lucknow.
His medal entry for the Army of India roll shows his further claim for the clasp 'Nepaul' was denied. No evidence to show service in the hills was shown and he was therefore only entitled to the Nagpore clasp and is found on the 102nd Madras European Regiment entry.
