Robert Ross served in the 2nd Battalion of the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot, which was re-raised in May 1804. They were stationed at Gibraltar by 1805 and sailed for Italy the following year to share in the Battle of Maida in Calabria in July 1806. Following the action, the 3rd Battalion of the Polish-Italian Legion, around five hundred strong, surrendered to Captain Hoste in the Amphion and the 78th Foot at Crotone on 28 July.

Ross must thence have re-joined the 1st Battalion in order to share in the actions in South-East Asia. They joined the invasion of Java and the capture of Fort Cornelis in August 1811.
