An early 1941 Second World War D.F.M. group of six awarded to Warrant Officer F. H. Parks, No. 58 Squadron, Royal Air Force

Distinguished Flying Medal, G.V.R. (581158. Sgt. F. H. Parks. R.A.F.); 1939-45 Star; Air Crew Europe Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Royal Air Force L.S. & G.C., E.II.R., with Additional Service Bar (W/O. F. H. Parks. (581158) R.A.F.), mounted as worn, claw loose on first, otherwise very fine (6)

D.F.M. London Gazette 11 February 1941. The original recommendation states:

'Sgt. Parkes has completed 16 operational flights including attacks on Berlin, Leuna, the Channel Ports and other targets in enemy country. In spite of being delayed in his training through illness, Sgt. Parks quickly became a reliable and courageous Navigator and Bomb Aimer. His coolness and gallantry in the face of enemy opposition has been outstanding.'

Frank Harold Parks was born at Eastbourne in April 1921 and prior to enlistment he had been training as an electrician. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1937 and served with No. 58 Squadron, who operated on Whitley bombers in the early days of the Second World War. Whilst their ORB does not record the names of those present, ten aircraft of his Squadron shared in the very first bombing raid of Berlin during the Second World War on 25 August 1940. Their aircraft attacked the Siemens Factory and drove home the attack. The Gazette which announced his award also featured three D.F.C.'s (Squadron Leader J. A. H. Tuck, Flight Lieutenant L. Crooks & Pilot Officer J. L. Mitchell) and three other D.F.M.'s (Sergeant A. M. Courbrough, Sergeant C. A. Hughes & Sergeant C. H. Stevens). He died in August 1986; sold together with copied research.
