M.S.M. I.V.A. 89 7 March 1946.

Vincent Freed was born at Charing, Kent on 16 November 1870, and educated at Llanarth South Wales. He originally enlisted in the East Kent Regiment along with his brother on 30 September 1889 but transferred to the 19th Hussars and was serving in India when the Hussars were sent to South Africa. Returning to England he was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant and posted to Curragh, County Kildare. Awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct medal in 1908, Freed was also promoted to R.S.M. and was next selected to become the R.S.M. of the Queen's Own Royal Glasgow Yeomanry.

Freed was given an MOD property for his lifetime for his exemplary service, to which he moved in 1919. The property was named 'Woodbine' after the variety of Honeysuckle that grew at the gate and was located just outside Dunoon with views across the Clyde Estuary to the far shore.

In 1939, the MOD had to re-claim the property turning it into a Convalescent Home, at which point Freed had to leave. He was awarded the M.S.M. in recognition of his services but died at Woodbine on 31 December 1947.
