Frederick Arthur Shaw who was born in Lindley, Huddersfield on 4 Aug 1873, was the third child but eldest son of F.H. Shaw, a woollen manufacturer and cloth merchant in Huddersfield.

Shaw served with the 12th Battalion, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment during the Great War on the Western Front from 23 January 1916, and was subsequently attached to the Labour Corps. For his services during the Great War, he was Mentioned in Despatches, London Gazette 4 January 1917, and appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Post war Shaw carried on the family business in the woollen industry but in a slightly different direction. He established himself in Somerset in order to manufacture woollen thread to sell to the carpet weaving industry, which was prominent in Somerset, particularly in Frome. He married Clare Boddington in 1902, the daughter of a well-known local family also in the wool trade, and together they bought 'Metchley House' in Frome. Shaw died in London in 1928.
