Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol, unnamed as issued; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (1305. Pte. R. Pilgrim, 17th Lancrs.); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue, unnamed, fitted with Crimea suspension, some edge bruises, nearly very fine (3)

Richard Pilgrim was born at Southwell, near Nottingham, and enlisted at London on 28 August 1854, aged 23, a butcher by trade. He joined the regiment in the Crimea from Cork on 20 June 1855, taking part in the siege and fall of Sebastopol. He embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. Great Britain on 8 October 1857, where, from July-September 1858, he was on detachment at Sholapoore but not entitled to the Indian Mutiny Medal. He re-engaged for 12 years’ further service at Aldershot in September 1866 and was discharged from Dublin on 26 August 1875, at ‘Own request, after 21 years service.’ Pilgrim was then aged 44 and had served a total of 20 years 364 days, including 10 months in Turkey and the Crimea, and 7 years 1 month in India. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal on 22 November 1875.
