Frederick Stewart Probyn, most likely a nephew of Thomas Frederick Arms, was born at Norwich on 26 August 1876. He served during the Boer War as a civilian veterinary surgeon, one of about 100 of whom volunteered for service in South Africa with the Army Veterinary Department, with whom he served from April 1902-December 1907. He served as a Major in the Army Veterinary Corps during the Great War in Mesopotamia and retired from the Army on 2 October 1920. The Major died at Sidmouth in July 1956.
