Walter Hubert Dowle was born at Portsmouth on 12 September 1897 and was a gardener before originally joining the army on 3 July 1917. He later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps on 15 November 1917 and into the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918 where he served with 124 Squadron as a Rigger. Serving at Halton from 9 August 1919 he moved to 20 Squadron in India from 7 September 1919.

With this formation Dowle was to serve in Waziristan, earning a ‘mention’ in 1920 for his work to go with an M.S.M. He transferred to 3 Squadron on 13 November 1920 and on return to the U.K. goes to ‘M’ Section based at Uxbridge on 10 May 1921. Dowle was discharged on 29 August 1921; sold together with his original M.I.D. Certificate and Royal Air Force Certificate of Service and Discharge.
