Albert John French was born at Bishop Steignton, Devon on 3 June 1869 and was a farmer by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy on 26 March 1885. Having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in July 1902, he was shore pensioned for the first time in May 1909. Recalled for the Great War, he served aboard Illustrious from 16 August 1914-26 November 1915, Torpedo Boat 1 from July-August 1917 and was put ashore in February 1919.
