Arthur Robert Denne was born on 6 December 1859 at Hythe, Kent the son of Thomas Denne, J.P. Educated at The Kings School, Canterbury and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant into the Kent Artillery on 14 November 1879. Elevated to Lieutenant on 21 August 1880, he transferred to the 12th Lancers in February 1882, then to the Munster Fusiliers in March 1882. On 26 November 1884, he was seconded for service to the Indian Staff Corps being promoted to Captain on 2 May 1893 and Major in 1901.

He saw service in the Burma expedition, where he was severely wounded, later taking part in the Chin-Lushai expedition and in the operations on the North-East Frontier of Burma in 1891-92 with the Irrawaddy Column. He later served in the Chitral Relief Force, the campaigns on the North-West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart, and with the Tirah Expeditionary Force as Transport Officer on the Line of Communications, for which he was 'mentioned'.

Denne was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel to take command of the 17th Infantry (The Loyal Regiment), Indian Army in 1906. Denne died at the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, Millbank following a medical operation on 8 November 1911 and is buried at Brompton Cemetery.
