Provenance:
Glendinning's, April 1990.

Charles Corbett Taylor was born at St Foy, France on 1 January 1827, the son of Henry Taylor of the Madras Civil Service, being baptised at the English Church, Dieppe on 18 January. Educated at Winchester and The Rev. Tennant at Blackheath, he was nominated for the East India Infantry in 1846-47 by Sir Robert Campbell Bt., on the recommendation of his mother who was by that time a widow.

Having passed, he went overland via Egypt and left Southampton in November 1847, being commissioned Ensign. Arriving at Madras in January 1848, young Taylor was eventually posted to the 1st Regiment of Madras Native Infantry the following month. Having served with the unit during the Second Burmese War (Medal & clasp), he went sick during 1853 and was advanced Lieutenant on 20 December 1854. Sent to England on sick furlough he was granted to be away for two years and three months from March 1856. Returned to India, he served with 'H' Company of his unit in the Saugor Field Division, being present at the action at Imleepanee in March 1859 (Mutiny Medal without clasp - this last offered at DNW in March 2021) and was 'mentioned' for his services. Retired Major in April 1866, Taylor died at Neufchatel, Pas de Calais in September 1873.
