Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Navarino (F. Sankey, Surgn.), a few very minor edge knocks, otherwise good very fine

Provenance:
Spink Numismatic Circular, May 1970.

Frederick Harvey Sankey, a native of Kent, was born in the village of Eythorne on 23 August 1803 and served as Surgeon aboard the 10-gun Brig-sloop H.M.S. Musquito during the Battle of Navarino on 20 October 1827. Whilst not anywhere near large enough to serve in the 'line of battle', Musquito still saw her fair share of the action with two men killed and four wounded - enough to keep Sankey and his assistant, Mr. T.H.B. Crosse, busy during the engagement.

Upon returning home, Sankey left naval employment and appears to have settled back in Kent: he was the Medical Officer for Wingham and also acted in the same capacity for at least one local Workhouse. He died at Wingham aged 64 on 22 April 1868.

Sale 24002 Notices
Please note the recipient of this Medal and Clasp is not Frederick Harvey Sankey, but Francis Sankey - the latter is confirmed as Surgeon aboard H.M.S. Musquito at the Battle of Navarino (as per ADM 104/14/117), with seniority from 17 January 1814: he was still serving in 1842 and died in 1871. The biographical details for F. H. Sankey can therefore be disregarded, though the naming details and condition report remains correct.
