Hong Kong District Watchmen's Force Merit Medal, silver (Det D.W. 18. Chan Yat. 1939.), engraved naming, good very fine and rare
The Medal was instituted in 1868 to reward merit amongst the solely Chinese organisation which predominantly policed the Walled City of Kowloon. In that period it was largely off-limits and unsafe for Europeans due to the large influence of the Triads which operated there. The Medal was never issued again after the Japanese took Hong Kong on 25 December 1941.
Chan Yat-kai was a Clerk at the National City Bank of New York who lived at 41 Fat Yuen Street, Mongkok as per the 1939 Juror's List of Hong Kong. The rank on his Medal is probably Detective District Watchman.
