J. M. Cunningham served with 42 Commando for their Northern Ireland tour from September 1998 - February 1999, the unit based in Armagh. He deployed to Sierra Leone aboard H.M.S. Ocean in May 2000 - June 2000. 42 Commando was later to deploy on Operation Telic 1 the invasion of Iraq in 2003 where they launched a helicopter borne assault on the Al Faw Peninsular to support 40 Commando Royal Marines. Cunninghams final deployment was to Afghanistan with 45 Commando in February 2006.
