Michael Aubrey Whiteaway was born on 22 May 1919 at Weybridge, Surrey and joined the 3rd Field Regiment (Territorials), Royal Artillery in October 1939, before being commissioned into the Intelligence Corps on 2 November 1940. Having volunteered for the Airborne forces, he completed a Parachute Course in March 1943 and thence joined the 1st Independent Parachute Platoon from the 6th (Welsh) Parachute Battalion at Comiso in Sicily. He served with the Platoon, part of the 2nd Independent Parachute Brigade in Italy, the South of France (Operation Dragoon) and Greece.
Whiteaway had his Medals issued in January 1951 and went on to be a successful Managing Director of a timber company, living at Sea Lodge, Fort George, Guernsey. He died at Guys Hospital on 10 October 1970 and his death was only discovered and reported in Pegasus in December 1991; sold together with copied service record and research.
