John Henry Charles Watts was born in 1879 at Stogumber, Somerset and was a labourer by trade upon his joining the Somerset Light Infantry on 27 December 1897. He served in South Africa with the Regiment from 4 November 1899-30 April 1903 and latterly in North China from 22 January 1912-31 October 1913. During the Great War he was with the 2nd Battalion at Quetta (British War Medal only) and was discharged in November 1919.
