William Bryan was born at Kiltealy, Enniscorthy, Wexford, Ireland, in 1856. He attested into the Royal Irish Rifles on 24 July 1874. He served in India 20 January 1876 to 30 April 1880 and then in Afghanistan between 1 May 1880 to 18 March 1881. Bryan then went back to India from 19 May 1881 to 15 September 1884 and then served in Egypt from 16 September 1884 to 8 September 1885. Following his service in Egypt he returned home where he stayed until 10 March 1886 before returning to India for a final time where he served from 11 March 1886 to 27 March 1893, returning home on the 28 March 1893, and was discharged as medically unfit on 25 July 1893.
