Christopher Durward was born at Edinburgh and was a baker by trade when he enlisted in the 1st Bombay Regiment of European Infantry at London on 14 May 1838. He served with his unit until 19 July 1859, at which point he was pensioned home from India with a pension of one shilling per day.
