Auction: 23199 - Spink Numismatic e-Circular 26: English and World Gold Coins and Medals: Featuring the 'Merry Men' Cache of Victorian Sovereigns - e-Auction
Lot: 6681

(g) Victoria (1837-1901), 'Shieldback' Sovereign, 1866 over 5 [Die 23], second larger young head, W.W. incuse on truncation, rev. crowned normal shield in wreath, edge milled, 7.97g, 6h (Marsh 51; Bentley -/159 same reverse die; MCE 527; S.3853), cleaned but lustrous, very fine, the reverse bolder, the overdate clear and previously unrecorded with this die number, rare thus

This overdate has previously only been confirmed with the reverse die number 17. A recent auction in London (DNW 144, 21 February 2018, lot 249) purported to also record a muling with die number 48. However it is evident from illustrations, that the 2018 coin differs from the obverse die seen on the die 17 'discovery' coin or indeed the present coin.
