NGC AU58 | James II (1685-1688), "Royal African Company", Five-Guineas, 1688 E&C, second laureate head left, elephant and castle below, rev. crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, •+• DECVS • ET • TVTAMEN • ANNO • REGNI • QVARTO • downwards on edge, 41.68g [643.22grns], 6h (MCE 120; EGC 317 [R2]; Holloway GH 46 [R2]; King 120; Stratos -; Spink 3398), small dragmarks before nose, and scuff in first quarter of reverse, otherwise playfully lustrous with pleasing peripheral orange hues, almost extremely fine, an honest and wholesome example, in NGC 'St. Helier' QR holder, graded AU58 (Cert. #6767923-002)
The King corpus lists 21 instances for this date; being the rarest type/date combination possible. Since 2005, there have been a further rather paltry ten instances.
