Great Britain: Birmingham Canal Navigations, one share, 1855[7], #2399, black on blue paper, red paper seal; together with receipt for £71 on subdivided shares #2327, 183[44], attractive arms at left, black on thick paper, embossed duty stamps. Incorporated in 1768. A canal in central Birmingham engineered by James Brindley, designed to connect the Black Country and its coal mines to the industries in the city. It was connected with the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal near Wolverhampton and later merged with the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal company in 1784 being clumsily renamed the Birmingham and Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Navigations (later changed to the Birmingham Canal Navigations). The canal network was one of the busiest in Britain, continuing successfully through the introduction of railways, and it remains an extremely busy waterway today for leisure cruisers.VF-EF (2)
