U.S.A.: Blue Ridge Railroad Co., 7% Guaranteed Mortgage Bond, $1000,/£200 1869 #527 signed on reverse by Henry Clews as Trustee, steam train, blue, cancelled. Henry Clews (1834-1923) was one of the largest marketers of federal bonds during the United States Civil war. He organized the "Committee of 70," which deposed the corrupt ring associated with William M. Tweed in New York City, and he served as an economic consultant to President Ulysses Grant. Towards the end of his life, he wrote one of the most famous classics about life on Wall Street entitled "Fifty Years in Wall Street". Small piece missing by the cancellation at bottom right, EF (2)
