Mary, Sole Reign (1553-1554), Groat, Tower, MARIA • (m.m.) • D.' G.' ANG.' FRA S hIB.' REGI' lombardic lettering, unbarred As, crowned bust left, wearing simply-jewelled plain bodice and pearl necklace, rev. VERITA-S (m.m.) TEM-PORIS FILIA, lombardic lettering and unbarred As, square-topped Tudor shield over long cross fourchée, terminals with 'fishtail' ends, m.m. pomegranate, 1.94g [29.95grns], 4h (North 1960; Spink 2492), an irregular edge and inconsequential chip, some faint hairlines to otherwise lustrous original fields, of excellent metal, a truly remarkable survivor, unimpinged by doubling, striking softness or circulation 'damnation', beautifully uniform, with an EXTRAORDINARY portrait for this infamous 'Bloody' Queen, matched by an exquisitely strong Tudor shield, extremely fine, excessively rare in this praiseworthy state
