The Klaus Bronny Collection of Bhutanese and Nepalese Coins
The first Mohur, was struck in the name of Lakshmi Narayan, the chief minister in Kathmandu at this time. He was the only minister to place his name on the coins of the Kingdom. He died two years later in 1690.
Rhodes et al. (1987) remarked that the Mohurs RGV 281 and RGC 282 are the earliest Malla coins which feature eight petals containing the astamangala emblems near the rim of the coin. Coins with this device were very popular in Tibet because of the Buddhist symbolism and also because the eight petals could be used as a guideline when cutting the coins into fractions in order to obtain small change. However, so far, fraction of Mohars of Bhupalendra have not been found in Tibet.
The Sukis were struck in the name of Riddhi Lakshmi, the mother of Bhupalendra, and who became Regent for her son during his minority. Bhupalendra ascended the throne at the tender age of eight and died aged only twenty in 1700 while on pilgrimage in Ayodhya.
