A Gentleman's Collection of Sri Lankan Coins - Part III
In 1655 the Dutch commenced authorizing local currency by countermarking the VOC Company monogram and appropriate mint initial on current Portuguese tangas.
Codrington writes in Ceylon Coins and Currency (p.102):
"The countermarks found on the Portuguese coins are three:-
i) The monogram GALE (Galle)
ii) The monogram of the Dutch East India Company, either plain, or surmounted by C (Colombo) or by I (Jaffna)
iii) The letter R."
