Lot: 8926

Victoria (1837-1901), 'Young Head' Sixpence, 1883 [No Die], Type A4, second young head left, rev. crowned denomination within wreath, milled edge, 6h, 2.81g (Bull 3255; ESC 1744; Spink 3911), the faintest of marks to the cheek, otherwise with a handsome tone and full lustrous flare, about uncirculated

Between 1871 and 1883, attempts were made to modernise the machinery sited at the mint on Tower Hill with lever presses introduced to replace the aging Boulton screw presses. It has been suggested that to distinguish those struck with the newer equipment, the die number was omitted generating the variety for the 1871, 1877 and 1879 years of production.
