Victoria (1837-1901), The So-Called 'Pattern' Crown, 1844 VIII, from the unfinished die, by W. Wyon, diademed head left star stops, young head left, extra metal at base of hair knot, rev. crowned shield within wreath, DECUS ET TUTAMEN * ANNO REGNI VIII * upwards on edge, eight-pointed star stops, 28.29g*, 6h (L&S 40; ESC 338; Bull 2564; cf. Spink 3882), the unfinished die clear at base of hair knot, lightly cleaned with a few surface marks, yet a darker tone to fields, rubbed, a bolder fine / near very fine, rare, in NGC holder, graded XF Details ~ Cleaned (Cert. #6768881-001)

Previously recorded as a 'Pattern', the unfinished die conforms to all other specifications of the currency issue, and has been encountered in almost all grades at public auction over the past two decades. It is reasonable to assume this is better understood as a currency variety rather than a deliberate preparatory trial.
