T.E.M. Army Order 66 of 1923.

Ernest Bassett enlisted with the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Devonshire Regiment at Plymouth on 4 August 1887 with the number 308. After the changes brought about by the Haldane Reforms his Regiment was changed to the 5th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment based at Tavistock, which he officially joined on 24 July 1908.

Embodied for service in the Great War he joined the 15th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment on 30 December 1916 with the Regimental number 316131. Transferring again to the 2nd Company Pioneers, Royal Engineers on 12 May 1917 with the number 515322, he entered the war in France on 15 March 1918.
