A Great War immediate M.S.M. awarded to Bombardier J. Martin, Royal Horse Artillery

Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R. (14688 Bmbr J. Martin. R.H.A.), good very fine

M.S.M. London Gazette 30 May 1919.

Note, one of seven Immediate G.V.R. M.S.M.s awarded to a Bombardier in the Royal Horse Artillery.

Jospeh Martin was born at West Norwood, Surrey on 13 February 1881, and is listed as a Carman in 1911. Serving as a Driver with the Royal Horse Artillery on the outbreak of the Great War, he entered the war in France on 6 October 1914.

Advanced Bombardier, he received his M.S.M. with the 'Peace Gazette' while serving with 'K' Battery, 7th Brigade, R.H.A. Leaving the military after the war, Martin appears on the 1939 census as a Garage Hand Mechanic and Heavy Worker - perhaps difficult work for a man so advanced in years. Despite this, he died at Camberwell, London in 1968 at the age of almost ninety; sold together with census data as well as medal rolls, M.I.C. and London Gazette entries.

Further entitled to the 1914 Star, British War and Victory Medals.
