Thomas Gordon Matthews, of Ebbw Vale in South Wales, was born in November 1913 and is confirmed upon the Medal Roll as serving with the 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers for Operations on the North West Frontier of India. Transferring to the Territorial Army Reserve, he was later assigned to the 5th (Home Defence) Battalion (TA) and by the time of his marriage in December 1940 was recorded as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant, at the young age of 27. Sadly however, he was to die only a short time later, in November 1941, of pneumonia, pericarditis and a hernia, and was interred at New Hall Lane cemetery in Preston, Lancashire.
