Joseph Cohen, of Jewish ancestry, was born in 1905 at Marylebone, London and was a hat maker by trade, who was living at Spitalfields upon his joining the Royal Welch Fusiliers in January 1924 at Shrewsbury. Discharged in November 1927, he was a tailor by trade upon his re-joining The Queen's Regiment on 20 July 1929. He transferred to the Corps of Military Police in June 1941.
