Ernest Reginald Gurton was born on 27 September 1893 at Battersea, London and was educated at the Strand School, Battersea. On leaving school he became a Clerk with the Port of London Authority in 1911. He served in the Great War and left for France on 18 April 1917. He died at Westcliff-on-sea, Essex on 18 September 1969.
