Albert Hughes was born at Stockport, Cheshire on 22 January 1901, working as a fitter prior to enlisting with the Royal Navy on 5 January 1917. Serving with the training ship Impregnable until 7 February 1918 he was transferred to H.M.S. Centurion. This Battleship saw some service during the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War. Hughes reached his majority with her on 22 January 1919 and was later to see service with Lion, Hood and King George V. Unfortunately he was discovered to be suffering from a chronic illness and was invalided on 3 October 1923.
