Five: 2nd Lieutenant G. S. Gillott, Royal Engineers, late Royal Navy, who was twice wounded during operations at Gallipoli

George Swinford Gillott was born at Ramsgate on 15 June 1891, and went to Uppingham School. Prior to enlistment he was a Mechanical Engineer.

Gillott enlisted as a Sapper in the 2nd Field Company R.N.D. Engineers , serving in the M.E.F. from 1 March 1915, he suffered a gun shot wound to the right thigh on 15 May 1915 serving in the Dardanelles, he was sent to Egypt to recover between 27 May 1915 - 28 August 1915, returning to the Dardanelles on 21 August 1915. He received a shrapnel wound to the back on 24 December 1915 and was sent to Malta on 31 December 1915 until 27 March 1916 and was then sent to Egypt from 28 March 1916 until 19 May 1916 where he was sent to be a part of the British Expeditionary Force until 25 October 1915. He returned home on 26 October 1916 and saw service until 9 March 1917 when he was then given a commission with the Royal Engineers the following day, being posted to the 2nd Bridging battalion of the Royal Engineers. He suffered further ill health in 1918 as a result of drinking impure water and was hospitalised as a result of this.

He was released from service on 16 January 1919 and moved to Scotland where he was married on 31 May 1924 and remained enlisting into the Special Constabulary. He died in 1977.

Sold together with boxes for the WW1 Medals and the Defence medal and a note from Argyll Constabulary dated 12 April 1946 confirming issue of a Defence Medal riband.
