The Sutherland Kommando appears to have comprised of approximately 250 men; the 9th South African Infantry participated in the East Africa Campaign and suffered particularly badly from disease and illness - beginning the campaign in February 1916 with 1,135 men, only eight months later their effective strength was a mere 116.
