Three: Private T. Ewbank, Krugersdorp Commando and 2nd South African Infantry

1914-15 Star (Pte T. Ewbank Krugersdp. Cdo.); British War and Bilingual Victory Medals (Pte T. Ewbank. 2nd S.A.I.), mounted for wear, about very fine (3)

Provenance:
City Coins, October 2019, Lot 150.

Thomas Ewbank served in German South-West Africa from October 1914, then in East Africa from May - November 1916, when he was discharged temporarily medically unfit due to contracting malaria. Recovering and attesting with the 2nd South African Infantry, he entered his third Theatre of War in France in early 1918, and was wounded in the left hand at Messines Ridge. Ewbank does not appear to have been by any means the perfect soldier: his records note misdemeanours including: 'using improper language to an NCO'; 'Breaking out & in of Hospital by climbing over park wall'; and 'Smashed a glass window in detention ward'; sold together with a file of copied research including Service History papers and casualty forms.
