Arthur Lowther was born at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire in 1883 and lived on Freemantle Road, Southampton prior to the Great War. Entering the war in France on 10 August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, he served with them for the next year in France. This Battalion was part of the 19th Brigade at the Battle of Loos and went into action on the first day, 25 September 1915, suffering heavy losses. Poor use of Gas hindered the attacks and the early detonation of two mines gave the Germans warning of the offensive, giving them time to prepare. Lowther was killed in the failed assault and is buried at Cambrin Churchyard Extension.
