Arthur Hopkinson was born at Bradford, Yorkshire in 1870 and enlisted at Lincoln on 1 June 1892. Posted first to the Straights Settlements he saw over two years of service there before being transferred to Malta. It was from there that Hopkinson and the rest of 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment were ordered to Egypt to take part in the British reconquest of the Sudan. Here Hopkinson served South of Wadi Halfa, one of very few British troops to earn both Queen's and Khedive's Sudan medals without clasps. Posted to India after the Campaign Hopkinson served there for five years before being discharged on 9 April 1904.
