'Lieut. S. Lowther and Lieut. C. W. Brabrooke (Quartermasters)
Have met the heavy demands upon their departments with unwearying attention and skill.'
The report of Brigadier General Marchant, Royal Marine Light Infantry, on 18 June 1918 regarding his Quartermasters at the Chatham Division
Pair: Major and Quartermaster J. Lowther, Royal Marines
Egypt 1882-89, no clasp (S. Lowther. Pte. R.M. H.M.S. I[...]onstant); Khedive's Star 1882, unnamed as issued, extremely heavy pitting and wear overall to both, ship name partially obscured, overall good fine (2)
Sydney Lowther was born at Newport, Pembroke on 23 September 1862 and enlisted with the Royal Marines at Bristol on 23 April 1880. Serving first at the Plymouth Division with H.M.S. Belleisle he later transferred to the Portsmouth Division. Here he served afloat first with Defence before transferring to Inconstant, on whose medal roll he appears for the Egypt Campaign.
Rejoining the Plymouth Division upon his return from Egypt, Lowther was appointed Corporal in 1883 and advanced Sergeant in 1886. It is in this rank that he appears on his L.S. & G.C. which was awarded on 24 November 1890. From there he joined the Depot Establishment as Quartermaster Sergeant on 28 May 1896.
Posted to Chatham at the turn of the century as Supply Clerk and Warrant Officer, Lowther was commissioned Quartermaster and Honorary Lieutenant on 13 June 1911. He was serving in that rank on the outbreak of the Great War, which he saw out with the Chatham Division. Having been in service for over thirty years at this point Lowther technically retired in 1917 - however his services were invaluable and he remained at his post until the end of the war, with a promotion to Major with the Reserve of Officers (R.M.L.I.) on 13 April 1918. Lowther returned to the retired list on 18 August 1919 and died on 5 April 1936; sold together with copied medal rolls and service papers.
Further entitled to a Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R. named to Sergeant S. Lowther, and a British War Medal 1914-20.
