William Wood was born at Sheepshead, Loughborough, Leicestershire in 1833 and was an ostler by trade. He served some 21 years and 45 days with the 78th Highlanders by the time of his discharge on 29 January 1872. He had served some 7 years in the East Indies and 4 years 5 months in North America. Upon discharge it was stated he was in receipt of:
'...Three Medals. Medal & clasp for Pegu. Medal & clasp for Persia. Medal & 2 clasps for India.'
The published Roll has him in receipt of the 'Defence of Lucknow' clasp rather than the 'Relief of Lucknow' clasp.
