The Canada General Service Medal awarded to Hon. Captain M. J. Rowan, No. 4 Battery, 10th Brigade, Royal Artillery, an Irishman who helped to put down the Fenian Raids

Canada General Service 1866-70, 1 clasp, Fenian Raid 1866 (1342. Sgt. M. J. Rowan 10th Bde. R.A. (No 4 Bat'ry)), good very fine

Melville John Rowan was born in November 1834 at Armagh, Ireland. Having served with the Royal Artillery in Canada during the Fenian Raids of 1866, by 1881 Rowan was a Quarter-Master serving at Dover Castle. He remained in the service and eventually rose to become Honourary Captain, living on Victoria Road, Old Charlton, Greenwich. Rowan died in August 1912.
