William Bray was a native of Leicestershire and was by trade a Labourer and had previously seen service with the East Yorkshire Militia. Bray enlisted in February 1855 into the 73rd Foot (3464) and saw service during the Indian Mutiny. He later transferred to the Bengal Artillery as Corporal (11653) with the 3/1st Bn. from August 1859-September 1861 when he then transferred to the Royal Artillery (5166). He was finally discharged with the rank of Corporal in April 1878. His service was somewhat colourful having been Court-martialled four times and appeared in the Regimental Defaulters Book. He had reached the rank of Sergeant on two occasions but was reduced each time. His intended place of residence at his time of discharge was to be Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex.
